One More Child On The Pitch, One Less On The Street

Thiago Motta is a 8-year-old player with the La Guadalupe soccer school in the community of Mi Pequeña Barinas in San Antonio del Táchira, Venezuela. His father Leimer is the coach of the team, who has collaborated with UNHCR in the creation of a youth network that promotes safe spaces and protection through sporting activities, contributing to peaceful coexistence among members of his community.

Thiago Motta es un niño de 8 años que juega en el equipo de fútbol infantil de La Guadalupe en la comunidad de Mi Pequeña Barinas, ubicada en San Antonio del Táchira, Venezuela. Su padre, Leimer, es el entrenador del equipo, quien ha colaborado con el ACNUR en la creación de una red de jóvenes que promueve espacios seguros y protección a través de la realización de actividades deportivas, contribuyendo con la coexistencia pacífica entre los miembros de esta comunidad.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?

My name is Thiago Lionel Contreras Motta. I am 8 years old and I live in a small community in San Antonio del Táchira in Venezuela. I live with my parents and 3 brothers. I study and play soccer at a school in my community.

I have been playing soccer since I was 3 years old. My aunt took me to training for years because my parents worked and they could not take me. Now my dad is my teacher and he helps me a lot with my training in soccer. I play in different schools, so I have had the opportunity to play with many children and that has helped me gain more experience.

Mi nombre es Thiago Lionel Contreras Motta. Tengo 8 años, vivo en una pequeña comunidad en San Antonio del Táchira (Venezuela). Vivo con mis padres y 3 hermanos. Estudio y practico fútbol en una escuela que hay en mi comunidad.

Juego fútbol desde los 3 años, mi tía me llevó a los entrenamientos durante años,   porque mis padres trabajaban  y no me podían llevar..ahora mi papá es mi profesor y me ayuda mucho con mi trabajo en el fútbol . Juego en diferentes escuelas. He tenido la oportunidad de jugar con muchos niños y eso me ha ayudado a ganar más experiencia.

What did you try to show with the photos? Was there any wider meaning?

The children in the photos are my classmates and friends from the different schools who were participating in a small tournament that was held to promote sport in a community called Llano Jorge, in San Antonio del Táchira, Venezuela.

I tried to show many things. The support for the children, the effort to get ahead. The work that is required to reach their goals, and how the community tries to help so that the young people do not get lost in the street. One more child on the pitch is one child less on the street.

Los niños que están en las fotos, son mis compañeros y amiguitos de las diferentes escuelas  que ese día estaban participando en un pequeño torneo que se había realizado para fomentar  el deporte en esa comunidad.  Fueron tomadas en otra comunidad llamada Llano Jorge, en San Antonio del Táchira, Venezuela.

Intento mostrar muchos factores.  El apoyo de los niños, el esfuerzo de salir adelante. El trabajo que cuesta llegar a cumplir sus metas, trato de ayudar a la comunidad para que los jóvenes no se  pierdan en la calle. Un niño más en la cancha es un niño menos en la calle.

Why is football important to you and your community?

For me football is very important. I think and dream of being a footballer and helping my family and the different schools that have always supported me. And for my community it is the dream of each child to get ahead and help their family.

The situation in my country is no secret to anyone. Most people struggle to survive and get ahead and support their children, they work hard to get from day to day and bring sustenance to their family.

I have not left my country, I am still here with my parents, brothers and friends fighting and hoping that one day this will change.

Para mí es muy importante. Pienso y sueño con ser futbolista y ayudar a mi familia y a las diferentes escuelas que me  han apoyado siempre. Y para mi comunidad es el sueño de cada niño salir adelante y ayudar a su familia.

Para nadie es un secreto  la situación que se vive  en mi país. Muchas personas luchan por sobrevivir y salir adelante y apoyar a sus hijos  trabajando duro para conseguir el día a día y traer es sustento a su familia.

No he dejado mi país, sigo aquí con mis padres, hermanos y amigos luchando y con la esperanza que algún día esto cambie.

What role does football play in your life at the moment?

Soccer in my life at the moment is very important at my age, I have been able to play in places where many dream of reaching. Thanks to the efforts of my parents, I have been able to play this beautiful sport and I hope to become a professional. I want to be a professional, but only God knows that I put my future in his hands.

Here we also follow and watch the matches of the English league, my favorite England player is Phil Foden.

El fútbol en mi vida en estos momentos es muy importante. A mi edad, he podido jugar en 

lugares donde muchos sueñan llegar y gracias al esfuerzo de mis padres he podido jugar este hermoso deporte y espero llegar a ser profesional. Como lo comenté antes, quiero ser profesional pero eso sólo lo sabe Dios en sus mano pongo mi futuro.

De este lado también se sigue y se ve los partidos de la liga inglesa. Mi jugador favorito de Inglaterra es Phil Foden.

What are the opportunities for female footballers in Venezuela?

In Venezuela it is very difficult for women. Many have to leave the country and look for opportunities abroad like many who already play in different teams in Europe and in our neighboring country (Colombia).

En Venezuela es muy difícil para las mujeres.  A muchas les toca salir del país y buscar oportunidades por fuera como muchas que ya juegan en diferentes equipos en Europa y en nuestro vecino país (Colombia).
