Goal Click teamed up with the Homeless World Cup to tell the story of the 16th edition of the 2018 Homeless World Cup in Mexico City - through the eyes of the participating players, coaches, and volunteers. More than 450 players representing over 42 countries travelled to Mexico to play in the tournament. 

Daniel Copto is manager of the Mexican programme “De la Calle a la Cancha” (“From the street to the pitch”). The organisation hosted the Homeless World Cup 2018 in Mexico City.

Who is in the photos? Was there any wider meaning to the photos?

The photos show Team Mexico and team Greece, taken at the main pitch at the Homeless World Cup. The photos show unity, solidarity, and togetherness, regardless of what country we were born in - we stand together, celebrate and are thankful for life! From an organizer’s point of view, it was a fantastic event with a great atmosphere and an incredible venue.

Why is football so important for Mexico and its people?

Football is a passion, and it becomes a life dream for many young people, it is the perfect tool to get them involved. Football is a tool to engage youth into living a healthier lifestyle. They can find a good reason not to use alcohol and drugs, and stop unhealthy behaviours so they can improve their quality of life.

What does football mean to you?

For me football means a healthy lifestyle and a meaningful job that allows me to work with homeless and at-risk youth. It is a tool that facilitates a relationship with beneficiaries – the homeless, drug users, gang members, marginalized people and kids in poverty. Football is a bridge between their needs and service providers.

What is the future for football in Mexico?

Professional football is very successful and a money making machine. Professional football is not realistic for our male players but it is for our female players. The level and quality of professionals is not improving in Mexico but regardless people are still going to the stadiums and the young ones are still dreaming to play professional football.
