Helping My Community Through Football

Tibisay Vegas, Venezuela

Tibisay Vegas is a community outreach volunteer and member of the Malala Women’s Network in El Cafetal, Venezuela. She also works as an assistant accountant in Caracas. Tibisay and her friends established a local women’s soccer team in 2019. She also has worked with UNHCR in the identification of persons with specific needs, focusing her efforts on identifying and assisting GBV (gender-based violence) survivors.

Tibisay Vegas es una promotora comunitaria y miembro de la Red de Mujeres Malala en el Cafetal, Gran Caracas, Venezuela. Tibisay también trabaja como asistente administrativa en Caracas. Ella, junto a sus amigas, crearon un equipo de fútbol femenino en el año 2019. Tibisay también ha colaborado con el ACNUR en la identificación de personas con necesidades específicas, principalmente, en la identificación y asistencia a sobrevivientes de violencia de género.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life? 

My name is Tibisay María Vegas Saltarín, I am 32 years old and I am a community outreach volunteer in the El Cafetal community in El Junquito, Greater Caracas. Currently, I am part of the “Malala Women's Network”, where I help my community. At the women's network, we are in charge of identifying cases of people with specific needs in vulnerable situations, and referring them to UNHCR and its partner organizations so that they can help them.

I started with soccer looking for an activity that would help me overcome a period of depression. I had just lost my mother and that affected me a lot. Women and young people, neighbours in my community, together with the sports coordinator of the local field, invited me to play soccer to encourage me to try a different activity. Since I had always played sports, I decided to do it. So, for me, football is life. When I play soccer, I feel that I drain and throw away the load that I have on top of me. It is a hobby that allows me to drain burdens, worries and sadness, and which fills me with a lot of perseverance and discipline.

So, with the support of the other young women in the community and the local sports coordinator, we formed a women's soccer team. Our coordinator encouraged us to form a small team to play against another community. Forming this team helped us to send a clear message to society: that soccer is not only for men, women can also play soccer and do it well.

Mi nombre es Tibisay María Vegas Saltarín, soy promotora comunitaria en la comunidad de El Cafetal en El Junquito, Gran Caracas. Actualmente, formo parte de la “Red de Mujeres Malala”, desde allí ayudó a mi comunidad. Nosotras, en la red de mujeres nos encargamos de identificar casos de personas con necesidades específicas (en situación de vulnerabilidad), y de derivarlos a ACNUR y a sus organizaciones socias para que puedan ayudarles.

Yo me inicié en el fútbol buscando una actividad que me ayudase a superar un cuadro depresivo. Yo acababa de perder a mi mamá y eso me afectó mucho. Mujeres y jóvenes, vecinos de mi comunidad, junto con el coordinador deportivo de la cancha local, me invitaron a jugar al fútbol para que me animara. Para que probara una actividad diferente. Como yo siempre había practicado deportes me animé a hacerlo. Así que, para mí el “fútbol es vida”. El fútbol “es nutritivo para la vida”. Comencé a jugar al fútbol con mucho optimismo y me quedó gustando. Es que cuando yo juego fútbol, yo siento que yo dreno, que yo boto todas las cargas que tengo encima. Es una afición que me permite drenar las cargas, las preocupaciones y las tristezas, y que me llena de mucha constancia y disciplina.

Así pues, con el apoyo de las otras mujeres jóvenes de la comunidad y del coordinador deportivo local, formamos un equipo de fútbol femenino. Nuestro coordinador nos impulsó a formar un “equipito” para jugar una final contra otra comunidad. Un equipo de fútbol que “reviviera” a la cancha local, atrayendo la presencia de más personas a ver y disfrutar estos partidos. Y también formar este equipo nos ayudó a enviar un claro mensaje a la sociedad: que el fútbol no es sólo para hombres, las mujeres también podemos jugar al fútbol y hacerlo bien.

Who is in these photos? Where were the photos taken?

All the photos were taken on the community court. However, our sports coordinator unfortunately passed away from COVID last year, which is why he does not appear in the photos.

In the photos you will see my son playing a game. There is one of the team's players, my sister-in-law, who helped me take the photos. The rest are boys and girls who go to practice soccer on the field.

In one of the photos there are two men jogging. They are father and son. This is an example of what happens in the community, fathers and sons, mothers and sons training together. Look how he goes up to the field to train with his son.

Todas las fotos fueron tomadas en la cancha comunitaria de la que te hablé antes. Nuestro coordinador deportivo, lamentablemente falleció de COVID el año pasado, por ello no aparece en las fotos.

En las fotos vas a ver a mi hijo jugando un partido. Está una de las jugadoras del equipo, que es mi cuñada, quien me ayudó a tomar las fotos. Los demás son muchachos y muchachas que van a practicar fútbol a la cancha.

En una de las fotos hay dos hombres trotando. Ellos son padre e hijo. Esto es un ejemplo de lo que pasa en la comunidad, padres e hijos, madres e hijos entrenando juntos. Mira como él sube a la cancha a entrenar con su hijo.

What did you try to show with the photos? Was there any wider meaning with the photos?

The photos were taken in the community field of El Cafetal, located in El Junquito. I think that the young people that appear in these pictures represent the future. Football helps them to move forward with their lives.

Being part of this project is very meaningful to me, these photos also represent me. They give value to what I am doing. Knowing that you are part of something so important makes you feel important. It is very relevant because you see my community. The community for which we have worked so hard and for which we have fought so hard. The community for which we always want better things.

During our practices we include our children. Because we are all mothers. When we play soccer, we set an example for our children that playing sports is something good that fills you with life and prevents you from being “idle” and keeps you away from dangers and vices. 

Formar parte de este proyecto es muy significativo para mí. Creo que los jóvenes que aparecen en estas imágenes representan el futuro. El fútbol les ayuda a seguir adelante con sus vidas.

Estas fotos me representan a mí. Le dan un valor a lo que yo estoy haciendo. Saberte parte de algo tan   importante te hace sentir importante. Es muy relevante porque se ve mi comunidad. La comunidad por la que tanto hemos trabajado y por la cual tanto hemos luchado. La comunidad para la que siempre queremos mejores cosas. Siempre hacemos cosas por ella.

Formamos el equipo de fútbol y durante nuestras prácticas incluimos a nuestros hijos. Porque todas somos madres.  Cuando jugamos fútbol le damos el ejemplo a nuestros hijos de que practicar deportes es algo bueno que te llena de vida y que te impide andar de “ocioso” y te aleja de los peligros y los vicios.

Can you tell us the personal story of anyone else in the photographs?

The father and son. The father was really challenged by that child, because when he was younger he was a little undisciplined, disrespectful and had some behavioral problems. Most of all, he was a very active child.

His dad took him to start playing soccer and that has given him a lot of structure, a lot of discipline. He has been progressing little by little. He has advanced so much that now he even plays in tournaments against other communities.  Soccer has given him structure and his parents have been very good guides.

El padre y el hijo. Al padre le ha “tocado muy fuerte” con ese niño, porque cuando él era más pequeño era un niño un poco indisciplinado, irrespetuoso y con algunos problemas de conducta. Más que todo era un niño hiperactivo.

Su papá lo puso a jugar fútbol y eso le ha dado mucha estructura, mucha disciplina. Él ha ido progresando poco a poco. Ha avanzado tanto, que ahora incluso, juega en torneos contra otras comunidades. El fútbol le ha dado estructura y sus padres han sido muy buenos guías.

Why is football important to you?

The field is the place where I go to nurture myself. This is where I increase my capabilities, and where I also go to relax.

For me, entering the pitch is a sensation similar to that of when you go to the beach. That you connect with that air, with that energy. When I go on the pitch to a game I feel nervous, but it is still good to connect with those nerves, because you are connected to the game.

Football for me is life. For me and for any human being, it is life and it is discipline.

La cancha es el lugar donde me voy a nutrir. Allí es donde yo incremento mis capacidades. Donde también me voy a relajar.

Para mí entrar a la cancha es una sensación parecida a la de cuando vas a la playa. “Que te conectas con ese aire, con esa energía”. Cuando entro a la cancha a entrenar me siento así.

Cuando entro a la cancha a un partido siento nervios, pero igual es bueno conectarse con esos nervios, porque estás conectada con el partido.

Como te dije al principio, el fútbol para mí es vida. Para mí y para cualquier ser humano, es vida y es disciplina.

What role does football play in your community?

Soccer has been very important to our community, because it has contributed to reducing violence here. The boys, since they have been playing soccer regularly, have found an alternative. An activity that they are passionate about. Because it is not only that they play it, it is that young people watch football, they talk about football all the time, they want to participate in tournaments.

Soccer saves lives because it helps you grow on a healthy path.  Since soccer is practiced regularly and in a disciplined way on this field, there are many young people who have been rescued, who have dedicated themselves to playing soccer and are not seen using drugs in the streets instead.

The soccer matches that are played on the field on Sundays are a community meeting point. Taking care of each other with the measures during the pandemic, but the community enjoys meeting on the field to watch the games. Many people bring their ventures to soccer games. Some sell "chicha" (a traditional Venezuelan drink made from rice), or soup during these matches.

Para nuestra comunidad el fútbol ha sido muy importante, porque ha contribuido a disminuir la violencia aquí. Los muchachos, desde que practican fútbol regularmente, encontraron una alternativa. Una actividad que les apasiona. Porque es que no solo lo juegan, es que los jóvenes ven fútbol, hablan de fútbol todo el tiempo, quieren participar en torneos.

Es que el fútbol “salva vidas”, porque te ayuda a crecer por un camino sano. Desde que se practica fútbol de manera periódica y disciplinada en esta cancha, hay muchos jóvenes que se han rescatado, que se han dedicado a jugar fútbol y no se ven consumiendo drogas en las calles.

Los partidos de fútbol que se disputan en la cancha los domingos son un punto de encuentro comunitario. Cuidándonos todos, con las medidas, durante la pandemia, pero la comunidad disfruta reunirse en la cancha a ver los partidos. Muchas personas traen sus emprendimientos a los partidos de fútbol. Algunos venden “chicha” (una bebida tradicional venezolana hecha a base de arroz), o sopa durante estos partidos.

What role does football play in your life at the moment? Who do you play with?

Soccer is an escape valve for me. It is life and discipline. It is the activity that allows me to drain all that I have on top of me.

Despite the fact that I neither play professionally nor do I intend to do so, I really enjoy football matches, and the nerves that I get before entering the field. I have greatly improved my skills as a footballer, the other day we won the final of a tournament against another community, where the girls are much more professional than us and we beat them 11-0! We scored 11 goals.

Even though I was very sad that day, because my dad had recently passed away, it felt so good to win like this! When we won that tournament it just felt spectacular.

El fútbol es una válvula de escape para mí. Es vida y disciplina. Es la actividad que me permite drenar todo eso que tengo encima.

Yo, a pesar de que no juego profesionalmente ni tengo intención de hacerlo, disfruto mucho los partidos de fútbol. De esos nervios que me dan antes de entrar a la cancha. Yo he mejorado muchísimo mis habilidades como futbolista. De hecho, el otro día ganamos la final de un torneo contra otra comunidad, donde juegan muchachas mucho más profesionales que nosotras y les ganamos 11 a 0!. Metimos 11 goles.

A pesar de que yo estaba muy triste ese día, porque mi papá había fallecido recientemente, ¡qué bien se sintió ganar así! Cuando ganamos ese torneo se sintió sencillamente espectacular.

What are the opportunities for female footballers in Venezuela?

I think there are fewer opportunities for women who play soccer than for men. I think it is, above all, a question of visibility. Women's soccer in Venezuela is hardly visible, it is not shown or it is not promoted as much. There is more interest in soccer games that men play.

Creo que hay menores oportunidades para las mujeres que juegan fútbol que para los hombres. Creo que se trata, sobre todo, de un tema de visibilidad. El fútbol femenino en Venezuela casi no se hace visible, no se muestra o no se promociona tanto. Hay más interés en los partidos de fútbol que juegan hombres.

What ambitions do you have for the future?

For the future, first of all, I ask God for life and health to see my son grow and accompany him in his steps. To be able to always be there for him and accompany him. To be able to take care of my family.

Yo, para el futuro, primeramente, le pido a Dios vida y salud para ver crecer a mi hijo y acompañarlo en sus pasos. Para poder estar ahí siempre para él y acompañarlo. Poder cuidar de mi familia.
