Jaider Becerra Palacios & Juan Carlos Asprilla Parra, Colombia

Jaider Becerra Palacios and Juan Carlos Asprilla Parra are participants from the Vení Jugá programme in Quibdó, Colombia, which supports the integration of displaced youth into the community through sport and education. The initiative is led by youth organisation AJODENIU (Asociación de Jóvenes Desplazados Nueva Imagen en Unión – Internally Displaced Youth Association) with the support of UNHCR and funding from the IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Jaider Becerra Palacios y Juan Carlos Asprilla Parra son participantes del programa Vení Jugá en Quibdó - Colombia, que apoya la integración de jóvenes desplazados internamente en sus comunidades de acogida a través del deporte y la educación. La iniciativa está liderada por la organización juvenil AJODENIU (Asociación de Jóvenes Desplazados Nueva Imagen en Unión) con el apoyo de ACNUR y del COI (Comité Olímpico Internacional).

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?

JBP: My name is Jaider Becerra Palacios, I am 18 years old and live in the El Obrero neighborhood. Until 2020 I participated in many neighborhood tournaments. In 2019 I was also in a sports training programme in Ibagué, Tolima. The pandemic did not allow me to continue.

JCAP: My name is Juan Carlos Asprilla Parra, I am 19 years old and live in Parque la Gloria. I have also played in many municipal sports tournaments. I am part of Venì Jugà.

JBP: Mi nombre es Jaider Becerra Palacios, tengo 18 años y vivo en el barrio El Obrero. Hasta el 2020 participé en muchos torneos de barrio. En 2019 también estuve en un programa de formación deportiva en Ibagué - Tolima, pero la pandemia no me permitió continuar.

JCAP: Mi nombre es Juan Carlos Asprilla Parra, tengo 19 años y vivo en Parque la Gloria. También he jugado en muchos torneos deportivos municipales. Soy parte de Venì Jugà.

What did you try to show with the photos?

JBP: I wanted to show participants of the Venì Jugà program and among them are Yenith Luz, Failer Murillo Murillo, Estiwuar, Elberth, Andrew, César, and Juan Davidy Yerleison. I intended to show the strong unity that has emerged between colleagues and how we use dialogue as a fundamental tool. 

JCAP: The photos project friendship and the opportunity to recreate ourselves and take advantage of free time in the midst of the pandemic. Football is a good use of free time. We do not need to know the lives and particular situations of these people. We meet to play.

JBP: Quería mostrar a los participantes del programa Vení Jugá y entre ellos están Yenith Luz, Failer Murillo Murillo, Estiwuar, Elberth, Andrew, César y Juan Davidy Yerleison. Tenía la intención de mostrar la fuerte unidad que ha surgido entre los compañeros y cómo utilizamos el diálogo como una herramienta fundamental.

JCAP: Las fotos proyectan el compañerismo y la oportunidad de recrearnos y aprovechar el tiempo libre en medio de la pandemia. El fútbol es una buena actividad para aprovechar el tiempo libre. No necesitamos conocer las vidas y situaciones particulares de estas personas. Nos reunimos para jugar.

How did you become displaced?

JBP: We lived in the community of Antadó La Punta and moved to the city of Quibdó when I was a child. In 2020, we were once again forced to leave our home and we moved to a new neighborhood.

JCAP: Our families have been touched by the internal armed conflict in Colombia. In 2006 we moved from Muguidó to Quibdó due to the armed conflict.

JBP: Vivíamos en la comunidad de Antadó La Punta y nos mudamos a la ciudad de Quibdó cuando yo era niño. En 2020, nuevamente nos vimos obligados a dejar nuestro hogar y nos mudamos a un nuevo vecindario.

JCAP: Nuestras familias han sido afectadas por el conflicto armado interno en Colombia. En 2006 nos mudamos de Muguidó a Quibdó por el conflicto armado.

What role does soccer and AJODENIU play in your life right now?

JCAP: For us, soccer is important because it helps us keep our minds occupied and gives us the opportunity to laugh, interact and meet other people, as well as to develop our abilities as human beings. It is a way to distract myself, it allows me to clear my mind and consolidate friendships.

JBP: Soccer is important because it takes me off the streets. I take advantage of my free time being on the field and interacting with others. AJODENIU taught me to respect and share with my peers.

JCAP: Para nosotros el fútbol es importante porque nos ayuda a mantener la mente ocupada y nos da la oportunidad de reírnos, relacionarnos y conocer a otras personas, así como desarrollar nuestras capacidades como seres humanos. Es una forma de distraerme, me permite aclarar la mente y consolidar amistades.

JBP: El fútbol es importante porque me saca de las calles. Aprovecho mi tiempo libre estando en el campo e interactuando con los demás. AJODENIU me enseñó a respetar y compartir con mis compañeros.

What ambitions do you have for the future?

JBP: I still have the hope of ​​being a soccer player, that is my greatest desire. I would like to have the opportunity to continue playing, otherwise I would study nutrition.

JCAP: I wanted to be a professional soccer player, but I did not achieve this. Currently, I am studying telecommunications engineering and what I most want is to finish my degree.

JBP: Aún tengo la esperanza de ser futbolista, ese es mi mayor anhelo. Me gustaría tener la oportunidad de seguir jugando, de lo contrario estudiaría nutrición.

JCAP: Quería ser futbolista profesional, pero no lo logré. Actualmente estoy estudiando ingeniería de telecomunicaciones y lo que más deseo es terminar la carrera.
