Goal Click teamed up with the Homeless World Cup to tell the story of the 17th edition of the Homeless World Cup in Cardiff - through the eyes of the participating players, coaches, and volunteers. More than 500 players representing over 50 countries travelled to Wales to play in the tournament.
Peter plays for Community Street Soccer, the Australian Homeless World Cup team. An initiative of The Big Issue Australia, Community Street Soccer operates in 18 locations throughout the country, covering all states and territories.
Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your football life?
My name is Peter. I only ever watched soccer and then a friend told me about Street Soccer, so I came down to the park and had a kick. That was 8 years ago!
What did you try to show with the photos? Was there any wider meaning with the photos?
You can see different teams at the Homeless World Cup in Wales and the amazing atmosphere. I wanted to show that soccer is a language of its own, bringing together people from all walks of life.
What is your favourite photo?
The South Africans were always dancing and cheering no matter if they won or lost and were always showing off their nation’s flag.
How was your experience of the Homeless World Cup in Wales?
The experience was brilliant – I have never been outside of Australia. It wasn’t just about the soccer but about meeting people from all walks of life and experiencing a different culture, atmosphere and country.
What are the opportunities for female footballers in Australia?
They should have heaps more opportunities. Take it to the next level – bring women’s football up to the same level as men’s football.
Why is football so important for Australia and its people?
We have a lot of other sports we play in Australia, and soccer has not been our main sport, but it is getting more and more popular. In the future we will get more stronger teams in the A-League.
What does football mean to you? What challenges has football helped you overcome?
Football helped me overcome my shyness! In Wales I met people from all over the world.
